What you''re actually paying for

A typical SVG visit has six cost lines. Most captains are familiar with the first three; the second three trip up first-time visitors.

1. Agency fee — one flat fee per visit (or per port), covering the named agent, communications, paperwork and on-island coordination.
2. Clearance & port fees — Customs, Immigration, Port Authority, garbage, light dues. Paid through the agent and reconciled.
3. Mooring / berthing — pre-allocated moorings (Mustique, Tobago Cays) or alongside (Glossy Bay Marina, Canouan).

Where it can cost more than you expect

• Importing / provisioning — duties in St Vincent are higher than any other Caribbean island (or European country), sometimes totalling over 70% of the invoice value of the goods being imported.
• Dive guides — required for diving in the Marine Parks and at Mustique, and can be up to US$900 a day depending on dates and timings.
• VIP transport — there are limited quality vehicles around the islands. Advance booking and reservations are essential, with non-refundable cancellation policies.
